Have you completed our ISTQB Foundation certification? And are you unsure which course should be your next step?

After completing an ISTQB Foundation certification, there are several options for further education. Here, we provide our recommendation on what your next step could be. We suggest choosing a direction, such as:

➔   Tester: Test Techniques or Agile Testing

➔   Test Manager: Fundamentals of Test Management or Risk-Based Testing

➔   Technical Tester: Test Automation, Technical Testing, or Testing in Agile Projects

These roles are, of course, generic, and you may find yourself covering elements of several roles. Therefore, more than one course may be relevant for you. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us for individual guidance.

For Testers

During ISTQB Foundation, you are introduced to a broad range of topics within testing, including various test techniques. However, the focus of the course is on preparing for the exam, which may mean you do not fully explore how to implement these topics in your daily work afterwards.

If you are looking for more hands-on experience with test techniques — the core craft of effective testing — our course on Test Techniques might be the right choice for you. This course helps ensure that the time you have available for testing is used as efficiently as possible by applying a more structured approach to test design.

You are introduced to some agile methods during ISTQB Foundation, but there is much more to explore. Many participants therefore continue with our 2-day certification course, ISTQB Agile Tester Extension, or alternatively our more practical course, Testing in Agile Projects.

For Test Managers

In ISTQB Foundation, you gain the fundamental concepts, principles, and techniques within testing and quality assurance. As a test manager, it may therefore be relevant to take our Fundamentals of Test Management course, which provides foundational knowledge about planning and managing testing activities.

If you prefer a more practical approach, our Risk-Based Testing course may be of interest. Risk-Based Testing helps you prioritize the scope of your testing and can be applied to planning, follow-up, and reporting activities.

For Technical Testers

Test automation is one of the key concepts if you want to succeed in agile development. In fact, it is often a prerequisite for executing testing in every sprint. As a technical tester, it may therefore be relevant to explore this direction. For example, you could consider Fundamentals of Test Automation or a more tool-specific course such as Fundamentals of Postman, Fundamentals of SoapUI, or Automation with Leapwork.

Alternatively, you may wish to dive deeper into more technical testing topics such as ISTQB Advanced Technical Test Analyst or Fundamentals of SQL for Testers.
