The software world evolves so quickly that even skills you acquired just a few years ago can feel outdated. The same applies to certifications. This is where ISTQB Foundation v4.0 comes into the picture. It’s not just a simple syllabus update – it has been completely rewritten. Yes, you can still use much of your existing knowledge, but the syllabus has been rephrased (for the better) and several entirely new topics have been added to make it more up to date – for example, there is a much stronger focus on agile.
Why a Completely New Version of ISTQB Foundation?
Imagine driving around in a classic 1960s Volvo Amazon in a world of modern cars. Yes, it worked for me for a while (and it was cool in its own way), but I was missing out on the latest technology – like what you’d find in a modern Tesla.
ISTQB Foundation v4.0 is the software testing world’s response to the wave of technological changes that have swept across the industry. Today, we work far more with agile methodologies, DevOps, the Whole Team Approach, CI/CD, early testing, and more. It’s time to learn some new tricks in our field!
What Are the Key Changes from ISTQB Foundation v3.1 to v4.0?
ISTQB Foundation v4.0 is still a 3-day “professional deep dive” into software testing – but now with a fresh makeover. Grab a cup of coffee, because here’s an overview of the exciting updates.
- Fundamentals of Testing: ISTQB Foundation 4.0 introduces new perspectives on the importance of testing and why we test. Testing is no longer just the responsibility of a few individuals – it’s a team effort! And yes, your personal skills now matter more than purely technical ones. Testing is both an activity and a role, and the syllabus describes an updated set of desired qualifications for testers.
- Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle: Welcome to the era of DevOps and the Shift-Left approach, which focuses on building quality into the product as it is developed – instead of trying to fix it once the damage is done. There is now more emphasis on a test-first approach, DevOps, retrospective meetings, and process improvement.
- Static Testing: The new mantra is “Prevent rather than detect.” In other words, prevent software defects by using early and frequent feedback.
- Test Analysis and Design: This part of the syllabus covers what was previously called “Test Techniques.” In addition to updates to the techniques themselves – including the introduction of Branch Testing – there is now a review of Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD). There is also a new focus on writing good, testable user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Test Management: Planning and estimation are no longer just rough guesses, but structured and well-considered estimates as part of planning. This includes both release and iteration planning (e.g., sprint planning). We also look at test prioritization, the test pyramid, and test quadrants.
- Test Tools: You’ll get an entire toolbox. What’s new is a range of tools that support team collaboration, as well as tools for DevOps. While not a large chapter, it provides a very useful overview of categories of modern tools used in software testing.
In my opinion, ISTQB Foundation v4.0 is by far the best ISTQB Foundation syllabus version to date – and definitely worth exploring, whether you already hold an ISTQB Foundation certification or not, as there is so much new value to gain.

Today, most Danish companies follow one or more ISTQB standards across various areas.
