“Which Automation Course Should I Choose?”

More frequent releases, many time-consuming, repetitive and manual tests, as well as a general need for increased test coverage, can all be good reasons to start working with test automation. The next question is: how do you get started?

Regardless of the motivation for getting started – whether it concerns a single project, a program, or the entire organization – you should always begin by gaining a fundamental understanding of the subject. What opportunities, prerequisites, and potential limitations are associated with automation? Who should build and maintain the automation? How should it be supported by tools?

If the framework and prerequisites are not in place, it can be difficult to succeed with test automation; a tool alone is not enough.

We therefore recommend starting with an introduction to test automation through our 1-day course, Fundamentals of Test Automation.

Once you have this foundation in place, you can further specialize in a specific technology, approach, or tool. You may also pursue an international certification in test automation to formally document your knowledge.

Overview of Test Automation Courses

1.   Start with the fundamental understanding

Start with the course Fundamentals of Test Automation, which is tool-independent and provides the necessary introduction to get started. The course includes many practical examples and answers questions such as: What are the possibilities within automation, and what does it take to get started?
What are the typical pitfalls when implementing automation?
What are the fundamental best practices and techniques to ensure you gain value from automation and achieve a successful implementation?

If you are looking to implement automated performance testing, you should instead consider the course Fundamentals of Performance Testing.

2.   Tool-specific courses
If you need knowledge on how to effectively build automation in a specific tool or framework, you should next explore our various tool courses. Our course portfolio covers tools for both user interface testing and API testing.
Regardless of the tool being taught, the purpose of the course is to train you in using the tool and provide techniques and best practices to ensure your automation becomes as efficient, robust, and scalable as possible. Ultimately, this reduces maintenance efforts in your automation setup.

User Interface (UI):
When testing a user interface, there are tools and frameworks that require different skill sets. Automation with Leapwork requires no technical prerequisites, as it is a no-code test automation tool. In contrast, Selenium Tester Foundation requires knowledge of Python. Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages.

API / Web Services
For testing at the integration level via APIs or web services, we offer courses in SoapUI, a commercial tool for testing both SOAP and REST APIs. Alternatively, we offer Fundamentals of Postman as an internal company course for those using Postman to test their REST services.

3.   Certification in Automation
If you need more in-depth theoretical knowledge about test automation – as well as formal documentation of your expertise – you should consider obtaining a certification in test automation.
ISTQB offers an advanced-level certification called ISTQB Advanced Test Automation Engineer. The course requires a strong general understanding of testing and an ISTQB Foundation certification. It provides generic methods and techniques for implementing and maintaining test automation within your project.
